Emma Gaines was an African American woman from Kentucky although she lived and died in Kansas. She was born in 1857 and the year of her death was 1949. She led many educational and social reforms for African American students through organizations. Gaines was involved in many organizations that further pushed for the rights of African Americans. She was embroiled in numerous church associations. Gaines was the head of many missionary affiliations. Gaines believed in education. Gaines placed much emphasis on education and the unity of African A,merican women. Gaines represents women involvement in politics and the society surrounding them. Gaines symbolizes women involvement before the Civil Rights movement. There was activism before what history dates as the movement of freedom. The amount of control women had is mass. During those days women had control of what children or the future citizens learn and their morals and beliefs.
